Hoe het begon…
1870: het prachtige victoriaanse stoffenboek van de firma Ferdinand Poche & Co ontstaat. Poche is handelaar in textiel en metaal, wol, opium en tabak en krijgt een startkapitaal voor zijn stoffenhandel van een aantal rijke handelaren in het Midden-Oosten, die hun fortuin verdienen met het net geopende Suezkanaal. Het enorme boek bestaat uit bijna 1000 staaltjes stof, waaruit de klant zijn gordijn- of meubelstof kan kiezen.
2018: Een Amsterdamse antiquarische boekhandel biedt het boek te koop aan. Wij springen meteen in de auto om het te gaan bekijken, en zijn verkocht. Hier zaten we namelijk al een tijdje op te azen: een mooi, oud stoffenboek vinden waarmee we een nieuwe journallijn zouden kunnen gaan opbouwen! De deal is snel gesloten.
2018-2019: De zoektocht naar een drukker die onze journals kan produceren met het fijne, vulpenvriendelijke Tomoe River paper begint! Uiteindelijk komen we in Azië terecht…
2020: De productie wordt gestart!
Juli 2020: de allereerste journals van Karmijn komen op de markt onder de naam Carmyne’s Journals. De stoffen van Poche spelen een hoofdrol: de omslagen zijn fotografische weergaven van echte stoffen uit het boek. Binnenin bevinden zich maar liefst 288 pagina’s van het mooiste vulpenvriendelijke papier: Tomoe River.

N.B. De omslagen voelen aan als stof. Dit konden we alleen bereiken door geen coating (een dun plastic laagje, dat bijna altijd over boeken heen zit) aan te laten brengen. Hierdoor zullen met dagelijks gebruik wel wat lichte gebruikssporen zichtbaar worden, maar elk journal krijgt hierdoor een persoonlijk en nog meer vintage uiterlijk.

How it all started…
Our new journal line is inspired by a 150-year-old cloth sample book from the British firm Ferdinand Poche. They were merchants in cloth, but also dealed in metal, wool, opium and tobacco.
We bought this antique and unique book at an antiquarian bookstore in Amsterdam and searched for pieces of cloth that were suitable for our covers. There are about 1000 pieces of cloth in the book! We made photographic reproductions of some of the cloth pieces and had them made into covers by our creative designer.
The inside papers are made of the fantastic fountain pen friendly Tomoe River Paper.

N.B. The covers feel very special, like cloth. We could only accomplish this by not putting a coating on – which is a plastic layer that most books have, to protect them. As a result, you might start to see some fading of the colors at the corners after some time, especially if you touch the cover every day. But it will give your journal a more personal and even more vintage look.
